A shifting seascape unfolds within a historic courtyard, where myth, play, and architecture intertwine to reveal the layered imagination of Naples.

A Myth Emerges in the Courtyard

Within the marble courtyard of the historic State Archives of Naples, Unfolding Partenope transforms the monumental setting into an immersive landscape inspired by the city’s mythic origins. Conceived as a temporary installation, the project draws from the legend of Partenope—the siren whose body, according to tradition, gave birth to Naples—translating the narrative into a spatial experience. Organic forms and iridescent surfaces evoke the fluid depths of the sea, inviting visitors to enter a playful yet reflective environment where myth and architecture coexist.

An Interactive Underwater Landscape

The installation is composed of a series of oversized, self-supporting panels that can be traversed, rearranged, and experienced from multiple perspectives. Their fluid geometries and shifting colors construct a contemporary playground where adults and children alike are encouraged to explore and interact. Rather than a fixed object, the installation behaves as a mutable landscape: paths emerge, disappear, and reconfigure through movement, transforming the act of visiting into a collective choreography of discovery and participation.

Turning Pages of Memory

Designed to be assembled and dismantled, the project echoes the quiet gesture of leafing through the ancient manuscripts preserved within the archives. Each movement recalls the act of unfolding stories, connecting the playful language of the installation with the deeper cultural memory housed in the building. In this dialogue between imagination and history, Unfolding Partenope becomes both a contemporary playground and a symbolic device—an invitation to rediscover Naples through the layered narratives that shape its identity.
