Between water, stone and everyday life—a retail space woven into the city
An Address Defined by Its Context
Situated along Utrecht’s historic Oudegracht canal, the project establishes a contemporary retail destination deeply connected to its surroundings. Rather than contrasting with the existing urban fabric, the intervention embraces the scale, character and rhythm of the city, creating a seamless relationship between the retail environment and the architectural identity of Utrecht. The proximity to the canal and the historic streetscape informs the atmosphere of the project from the very first approach.
Warmth, Rhythm and Visual Continuity
The interior is defined by a composition of warm materials, precise geometries and carefully orchestrated sightlines. Timber surfaces introduce a sense of familiarity and comfort, while exposed technical elements contribute clarity and authenticity to the architectural language. Soft lighting enhances a series of bright wall illustrations created by artist Philip Lindeman, whose graphic interventions introduce an additional layer of visual identity. Together, these elements create a sequence of interconnected environments, encouraging intuitive movement and visual continuity throughout the store.
A Contemporary Layer Within a Historic Structure
Located within the historic Kasteel van Antwerpen building, the project becomes part of Utrecht’s everyday urban landscape. Open views and fluid circulation foster a sense of accessibility, while the interplay of materiality, light and volume creates an environment that feels both grounded and contemporary. Integrated within the existing architectural framework, the store contributes a new layer to the building’s ongoing narrative while establishing a distinct identity of its own.
