Within an industrial relic reborn, space becomes a calibrated stage where brand, heritage, and contemporary life converge
Heritage Recast as Urban Gesture
At London’s Battersea Power Station — a former coal-fired landmark reimagined as a vibrant riverside quarter — Thirtyone Design + Management guided the realization of Theory’s new store within the grand Turbine Hall. Here, the patina of industrial Art Deco and monumental brickwork frames a contemporary retail environment. Rather than interrupting history, the design works with it: articulating modernity through balance, restraint, and a keen sensitivity to context. The result is a retail space that feels integral to the structure’s renewed civic presence, anchoring Theory’s legacy within London’s cultural fabric.
Spatial Poise and Material Resonance
Theory’s identity — defined by refined tailoring and quiet sophistication — is echoed in the spatial language of the store. Within the vast hall, proportions are carefully composed so that materials and light engage in quiet dialogue: the airy volumes of the Power Station envelope a calm, composed interior where textiles and forms are foregrounded without spectacle. The design places an emphasis on tactile surfaces and curated transitions, allowing the act of discovering garment and space to unfold with ease. The industrial heritage, preserved and respected, serves as a backdrop that accentuates rather than competes with the contemporary expression of the brand.
Retail as Architecture of Experience
More than a commercial setting, the Theory space becomes an encounter between city, brand, and architecture. Within this historic crucible — part grand hall, part living public space in Battersea’s larger regeneration — visitors are invited to linger, to move without rush, and to appreciate the nuanced tension between past and present. In this context, retail becomes architecture of experience: moments of pause framed by heritage, where each detail and gesture contributes to a measured sense of calm and clarity.
